Mightier than the Sword

The first expression I heard which made use of the words "mightier than the sword" was concerned with a pen. Many years later, I read the same line in regards to the guitar. It didn't take me long to realize that for any motivating expression, there could exist an infinite number of permutations and combinations. What makes those combinations unique is the person who's writing them. Each of us has something to contribute. Many great scholars, philosophers have said that the greatest of all human aspirations is to matter. It's to make a difference. In a world of crashing stock markets, rising fuel prices, war, poverty, one might ask "How do I matter?" And here's the answer- you don't. An image of a man, alone, scared trying to fight a war he's convinced he'll lose is not particularly one which inspires greatness. The image of a few societal misfits, nagging each other to work despite their weaknesses does a much better job. My 11th grade teacher told me once "in science, proof comes first, then comes faith. In spirituality, faith comes first, then proof". Accepting the world as exactly the way it should be, inspires greatness. No one goes to heaven without dying, no one gets a toned body without pumping iron. Every obstacle, is simply an excercise. It's there for you, for me, for us all. When did we get up one morning and decide that we weren't capable of changing things for the better? It's love. Love for the way things have been, the way things are and the way things can be. That's the forgotten cure. Each of us has something to contribute, we have to believe we can before we can.

We love you Jeff !
